You know what I’ve been staring at this scene for a few minutes and some things strike me as odd. Note that I am/was pretty much in agreement with Wally being completely and actually dead as much as it killed me to say but watching this scene closely things make me think.

Wally disintegrates but in the right top panel for a moment he is staring through his own hand. Even when burning up you don’t become translucent.  In the right hand panel in the second row Wally flashes between translucency and transparency. When an object burns up or disintegrates they don’t become more then less. And in the same panel Barry is able to stick his hand right through him like he is a ghost and just not there. For the next two panels with him in it he continues to go back and forth. And in the final panel he is still running as he bursts out of existence and all his particles move back in space in the same direction. In fact it looks similar to what happens when planes break the sound barrier, not exact but similar. Greg said there was no Speed Force on Earth-16 but that doesn’t rule out other phenomenon taking place.

The Scarab also says that Kid Flash is acting as an exit valve for the Chrysalis energy.  We know that Black Beetle didn’t know how to stop the Chrysalis once activated, and Blue Beetle calls it an “endgame.”  No failsafes.

So we have this alien weapon utilizing energy we don’t know anything about.  It’s dicking around with the Earth’s magnetic field, which is mysterious enough anyway- I mean, correct me if I’m wrong, but aren’t scientists only now starting to figure out how magnetism works?  The details and exact process?

And then there are the speedsters themselves- they’re generating enough kinetic energy to try and match the Chrysalis energy, and I think it’s a pretty safe bet that the only time anything like that has been tried was when they faced Neutron, but even then there were key differences.  The Flash family were trying to create a wind funnel, not utilize their speed trails to counter an unknown alien energy; and Neutron was nowhere near as powerful as the Chrysalis.

There are so many unknowns here that it’s premature, I think, to write Wally off.

Plus the Scarab says “cease,” not “die” or “atomize” or “destroy” or other words that you’d think would be its first choice if Wally was incontrovertibly dead.  Scarab also terms Wally an “exit valve”, a notion I find fascinating.  You have the Chrysalis energy and then you have the speedsters containing it, and the energy seems to be attracted to Wally in an attempt to stabilize, to find balance.  I will freely admit that I suck at chemistry about as much as is humanly possible, and physics is entirely over my head.  But you’re dealing with magnetism, immense amounts of energy, and speed- kinetic energy.

I found an interesting quote in my 30 Second Theories book regarding electromagnetism:

The equations, it turned out, required an unexpected factor: the speed of light.  This revelation led to the understanding that light and radiant heat can be thought of as moving variations in electromagnetic fields.  These moving fields came to be known collectively as radiation.  Investigations of radiation led Max Planck to invent quantum theory and Albert Einstein to come up with his concept of relativity.  (p. 28)

The equations mentioned “[…] describe the complex interplay of electric and magnetic fields.”

We have mentions here of light and magnetism and radiation and speed… thumbing through the section, I also saw mentions of teleportation and string theory.

String theory!  Beetle’s use of the word “failsafe” was extremely deliberate (on Grandon’s part, not his).  It’s a hearkening back to Season 1.  I think string theory would be another callback for us in Season 3, had Young Justice been renewed (or if it is renewed later).

Brella’s instinct to look at the zeta tubes was spot on.

Just like the show itself, it’s too early to write Wally off.  Just like the fandom- he ain’t dead!

#I really wish I actually understood this stuff #It’s fascinating #And can I just say I grow ever more impressed with Brella #In general of course #But with this in particular- how she saw the potential in the zeta tubes #And just how cool is it that this discussion is brought to you by a freaking CARTOON #Fitting that science prodigy and chem whiz Wally is the catalyst for it #LOOK I MADE A SCIENCE JOKE #… did I do it right

wow SHUT UP y’all are the ones with the fascinating theories here!! damn, son.

One other little thing – the energy from the chrysalis was originally using the speed trails left by Barry and Bart as an exit valve, but when Wally appeared, because he was slower, he took the place of these “speed trails.”

AND, it looks like he’s being pushed back by something – some kind of barrier. He seems to be running up against something that’s slowing him down and causing him to disappear, and he doesn’t dissolve or disintegrate or anything of the sort – he starts running up against this invisible field, and that’s what seems to dissolve behind him in the last gif – those particles are in front of him, almost; not a part of him.

Really interesting stuff.

I’d like to add my two cents worth to zeta beam theory.  I definitely think Wally is alive, and that the zeta beam radiation plays a part in it.

Wally leaves the watchtower to go help through the Zeta-Tubes.  The zeta radiation had probably not worn off YET when Wally got to the North Pole.  So whatever the alien energy that disrupts earth’s magnetic fields that fired at Wally PROBABLY mixed with the zeta beam radiation that wally was fresh out of the tubes from.  Since this thing messes with Earth’s magnetic field my first guess is that Wally was teleported to another dimension.

Now before someone brings up how the zeta tubes teleportation beams are a yellow/gold color, you’re right.  But we’ve also been shown something else that runs on zeta radiation (along with chronotron radiation), the time machine Bart went back to the past in.  It’s color is blue when it’s radiation is used.

At the end of Bloodlines when Bart’s time machine leaves the year 2056 to go back in time to 2016, it’s charges up THEN disappears in a bursting flash of light.  Similar to THE SAME WAY Wally disappeared in those last two panels above.

Now I don’t know how different forms of radiation works or how they are formed right off the bat.  But we do know what elements are in play here:

  • We’ve got a zeta radiation covered Wally running probably near the speed of sound.
  • We’ve got the kinetic energy generated by the 3 speedsters.
  • We’ve got the speed trails formed by the 3 of them.
  • We’ve also got the chrysalis energy which messes up the earth’s magnetic field, and it’s firing beams at Wally.
  • There’s also the potential possibility of the earth’s magnetic field not fully recovered at that point could allow someone to slip through a dimension.

Now I don’t have a degree in nuclear physics.  BUT I would be fully confident in buying that the three things bolded above COULD make some form of radiation and COMBINE itself with the zeta radiation Wally is covered in.

IMO Wally is alive and I believe it is thanks to the fact THAT he traveled through zeta tubes from the watchtower to earth.  If zeta beam radiation can be combined with chrontron radiation to go back in time.  I DON’T think it’s a bridge too far to buy into the idea that Wally was teleported due to still being covered in zeta radiation combined with the magnetic field disruptors energy.

What does everyone else think?

If there is only ONE THING missing in this episode it’s THIS.  When, Wally pulls back the curtain, and after perdita revoked Vertigo’s diplomatic immunity; he should’ve ripped off Roger Murtaugh’s “It’s just been revoked.” line from Lethal Weapon 2, by stating, “You’ve been revoked!”

Cause given Wally’s penchant for pop culture references ranging from Teen Wolf, Harry Potter, Planet of The Apes, Blazing Saddles, Speedy Gonzalez, Casablancha; you just know HE WOULD seize THAT OPPORTUNITY if given the chance. :D

REBLOG THIS if you feel killing off Wally West was the wrong decision

………and/or IF it’s a month later and you’re still not over it.

Myth #1: “Greg categorically stated that Wally West is dead and will never come back.”

I did not. Surprisingly, I was not even asked this question and thus never responded to it at all. Now, let me be clear. I also have not stated categorically that Wally West is not dead will definitely come back. And I’m not going to do either. Let me illustrate why with an example:

You’ve seen memorial holograms for Jason Todd/Robin and Tula/Aquagirl. There are four potential scenarios for those two characters coming back:

Scenario A) Both are going to come back.

Scenario B) Jason is going to come back, but Tula is staying dead.

Scenario C) Tula is going to come back, but Jason is staying dead.

Scenario D) Both are staying dead.

Break it down like this, and it becomes clear why I won’t answer any questions about either character in this regard. Assume, just as a hypothetical example, our plan was Scenario C. Then someone asks me about Jason. They say, the show is over; if he’s really dead, why not tell us. This sounds logical (in the moment), so I state that Jason is staying dead. No harm, no foul. I’ve only confirmed something that the show itself already stated. No big deal. That is, until someone else asked me about Tula. I don’t want to answer this one, of course, because I want her resurrection to be a surprise. But I also don’t want to lie. So I go for my standard “SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.” But then someone realizes that I was willing to be clear about Jason, but not about Tula. Ipso facto, Tula must be coming back. And I’ve just spoiled my own show. Which, as I’m sure you know, I am quite LOATHE to do. Clear?

Greg Weisman on ASK GREG (x)

There’s still hope after all! *tears of happiness* :D

(via elrickeyblade)

You know what makes me happy about this situation?  The fact that Greg ACTUALLY felt the need to go out of his way to say that “I never said Wally coming back WASN’T a possibility.”  He could’ve simply waited till a question that was asked of him pertained to this.  If the plan was to have Wally killed off for good, why bother going out of his way to disprove a myth about something he never discussed?

If he wants us to believe Wally is gone for good on Earth-16 why bother disproving a myth, IF he got the desired reaction?

THEN there’s the fact that he brought up the discussion on Barry dying being a possibility when breaking down season 2.  If Wally’s death is supposed to be permanent and sacred, why second guess that by discussing Barry being a possibility?

He also framed Wally’s status by the end of season 2 to be “considered dead”, not dead in general.

Maybe I’m setting myself up for more disappointment, BUT this does feel alot like Greg trying to get the fandom to read between the lines to a certain degree.  But it is something that has made my day.

Really?  Outside of the cadmus arc, when did he have relevance to the plot in JL(U)?  Wally in the comics had some maturity issues he had to get past.  In the comics when he started out as the flash, he wasn’t the easiest person to get along with.  Mostly because he felt he was carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders.  He could be a jerk to people at certain moments, not because he meant to be, but because he had to get past his own insecurities and personal demons.

Young Justice captured the spirit of that character on the show.  Justice League (Unlimited) didn’t even come close.

M’gann doing that wouldn’t bother me as much IF she moved on from not going back to Conner.  Trying to get us to root for them after what she did is a pipe dream IMO.  All the other members on the team more interesting than Wally?  Please, Kaldur is pretty much a stiff soldier. And Conner isn’t THAT much better in that department either, barely going beyond gruff.  Wally is a MUCH MORE fun character to watch and has the most emotional range out of all the original team members.  He could be a class clown one minute, and be absolutely serious the next. He could be the most clueless guy one moment and a guy intelligent enough to help build an electrical device to defeat the Reds the next. He could be a jerk to someone in one scene and a guy you could talk to about anything in another.

PLUS unlike the other characters he didn’t have a bunch of background baggage that he swam in like the other characters did.  And since the show liked to turn some of it’s characters into mopey angst buckets, I considered that a good thing in Wally’s case, to have someone WHO DIDN’T.

THIS version of Wally West is the same one that many people reading his comic became a fan of, and still miss to this day, a guy who grew as a human being.  In Justice League (Unlimited), he was Wally West in name only.  The only aspect of him they got right was him hitting on women.  The rest of him, was like a weird hybrid of Barry and Bart Allen.

To me, I have and always will abide by the late Boyd Kirkland’s rule on effective storytelling, “Good stories always have to start with characters you care about and can relate to on some level.  If you don’t have that, who cares what their powers are or what happens to them.”

Maybe THAT’S why I find M’gann unrelateable in this case, after she did something that could be considered a form of rape.  At least when she did what she did to “the bad guys”, you could make an argument about “the ends justifying the means”.  With Conner?  I had no sympathy for her.  Maybe if she realized she can’t go back to the way things were and expect it to be healthy maybe I would respect her for realizing that.

Just a fair warning to all of you ahead of time.

If any of you are planning to make any April Fools jokes on how Wally West is alive in Young Justice canon and it’s been confirmed, then

however, i wouldn’t have wanted artemis to quit being a hero. i like to think that its in her and like she said, she wouldn’t give it up till her dying day”. but we can agree to disagree on that.

good job.

I thought my phrase from her, “I’ll be back, but I just need some time.”  made it clear that I wasn’t intending on her giving up being a hero.  Just that there were things she might’ve wanted to straighten out in her life like school, family, and friends.  BEFORE she gets back into the hero gig full time.  There were 4 months of her life where the world (with the exception of a few people); thought she was dead.  I think it’s 100% in character for her to want to make up for that lost time while she was undercover.

My personal headcannon in all this is that she was stressed out to the max under the situation she was in when Kaldur was comatose.  Which I think is accurate with what we got from her narration in “The Fix”.   So I can personally see that she’d do a little R & R for a little time after Endgame.  I agree with you that being a hero is something she’s not going to give up doing that easily, HOWEVER there is nothing saying that she (or ANYONE ELSE for that matter), can’t take a break from it from time to time.

Young Justice (Endgame)- how it should’ve gone down.

Here’s how I would’ve done Endgame. While I realize why they had Wally die (war HAS TO have casualties), it should’ve been Barry, not Wally.

Here’s my revisions:

First Change: Change it so that some of the Reach ships are attacking the earth as a distraction from the Reach Bombs. Half the heroes attack the ships, the other half disarm the bombs, there are 11 bombs.

Attacking the ships includes the 2 Beetles AND Aqualad. Once Blue destroys Black’s scarab. THAT is when he finds out about the last bomb that they didn’t know about.

Second Change: In the cut scene where they say they both want to go back to the life while in France. Wally proposes to her:

Wally: Artemis will you marry me? I wish I had the ring with me and it’s back at the house, but this just felt like the right moment.

Artemis: Of course I will. (They kiss again)

Third Change: Barry is the one who makes the heroic sacrifice to save Wally.

The scene is revised as follows:

(Wally starts to disappear, BUT Barry grabs his hand and slows down to start absorbing his chrysalis’ energy)

Flash: Impulse, grab KF’s hand.

(Impulse slows down and grabs KF’s hand, as they all start running holding hands together)

Impulse: Alright, now what?

Flash: Tell Iris, I love her.

(He elbows Wally into Bart, and they end up crashing a few yards from the cyclone)

Kid Flash: NOOOOOO!!!!!!

(As the cyclone dies down, they see that Barry disappears, having absorbed the chrysalis’ energy of him and Kid Flash when he slowed down; he slowed down to the point where the speed would no longer protect him; he tried speeding up again, BUT it was too late)

(Nightwing, Artemis, Superboy, Miss Martian, Aqualad and Blue Beetle arrive)

(They soon realize what has happened as Bart just stares in disbelief, and Wally is crying)

Wally: It’s all my fault. It should’ve been me, not him. He didn’t have to save me.

(Wally is on his knees in grief, as Artemis bends down to hug him. Wally puts his head on her shoulder)

Fourth change: Wally shows up at Barry’s house to tell Iris the tragic news. She hugs Wally crying, as tears roam down her face.

Fifth change: Static tells the Runaways he’s going to join the team. But the Runaways are still going to be a group of misfits.

Sixth change: Superboy and M’gann don’t get back together, the scene goes like this.

M’gann: So you want to do something on Saturday?

Conner: I’m sorry M’gann, I love you, but after what you did. It’s just not gonna be the same.

Seventh Change: Nightwing is taking a leave of absence  He promised after what he put the team through that he would demote himself from the team. Nightwing TRIED to convince them that Kaldur was leader again, but the team voted to put Batgirl in charge, since she was not going behind their backs. Kaldur, Artemis, and Wally can still be on the team BUT under Batgirl’s supervision.

Last Change: Flash’s memorial in the watchtower. New Flash (Wally West) is staring at the holo statue. As Bart and Artemis (both in civvies) walk in. The scene goes like this:

Bart: Nice ring Artemis, from Wally?

Artemis: Yup, though we don’t know when yet.

Bart: Hmm, crash.

(They join him)

Wally: I feel like a fraud. I took his name, after he saved my life. I wanted to be a hero again, but not like this.

Artemis: Don’t do this to yourself Wally, Barry would understand.

Bart: Besides Central City, no the world still needs the Flash.

Wally: But how can I do the Flash name justice, when I’m slower than you 2?

Bart: Dude, you don’t need to be the fastest. It was your little bit more of speed that helped save the world. All you need is to give everything you can.

Wally: I’ll try, but shouldn’t you two be suited up?

Bart: I don’t want you to feel obligated to filling Barry’s shoes, if you ever want to be Kid Flash again. It’s still yours. That and I need to take a break, I came back to save Barry and Blue, the only one I did save will never be the same again, now that everyone knows who he really is. I’ll be back as Impulse eventually.

Wally: Crash. What about you babe?

Artemis: I need a break too. The time alone while Kaldur’s mind was scrambled made me appreciate how much normalcy I’ve been needing for awhile. I’ll be back, but I just need some time. Maybe get caught up with school again once the witness protection agent that helped Nightwing with this, sorts everything out. (she kisses him, as they walk out holding hands)

Artemis: So you gonna be a part of the Justice League?

Wally: Nah, I’ll stay with The Team for now, then go from there.

(Bart stays for a second to look at the statue, then leaves).

While I get that everyone is going to die eventually (some more unexpected than others), one of my big hangups with Wally’s death (among MANY) is that I felt there was still PLENTY of mileage left to get out of Wally as a character.  And those that support his death have YET to convince me otherwise.

So what does everyone think, sound like an ending most of us would’ve preferred?
